Percent Series Part 3: Practice Percent Applications
What's included

Solving percent applications is an extension of ratio and proportional reasoning taught in 6th and 7th grade math. This lesson was designed to practice and extend the concepts taught in the Percent Series Part 2 class. In this lesson students will: - Use proportions to solve percent applications requiring the students to find the part, the whole, or the percent. These applications will include problems which are a bit more complex and extend student understandings of percents. Prerequisite Skills: In order to be successful in the class students must: 1. Know how to set up a percent proportion which can be used to solve a percent application problem. This lesson is the third of a seven-part series of lessons offered about percents and percent applications. Students will be provided with a guided lesson and practice document which will need to be printed out before class. This is an interactive class. Students will be given opportunities to participate throughout the lesson. I have a constructivist style of teaching. Students are given opportunities to explore an idea. I, then, facilitate a discussion of student observations, ideas, questions which leads into an explanation/teaching of the mathematical concepts involved. Students will learn the procedural skills involved, but only after conceptual understanding has been built.
