Class Experience

The first class session will open with a short show and tell to introduce learners to their classmates and get them comfortable with each other and the teacher. Then, each class will follow the following format: the teacher will introduce the goal and guidelines for each STEAM activity. After a brief planning and question period, everyone will jump right in and complete the following STEAM-based activities:

Day 1: Peep float using toothpicks and jellybeans/gumdrops/marshmallows

Set up "rubber egg" experiment and make predictions about what will happen to the egg over time

Day 2: Build a house for our peep using graham crackers and icing

Observe "rubber egg" progress and discuss what is happening to the egg and why.

During each activity, we will discuss the goals of the activity and how to test and make improvements as you work!

The teacher will encourage reflection and conversation using the following prompts:
- How could you improve your design?
- If you could start over, what would you do differently?
- What other materials could you use to complete this challenge?

Learning Goals

Students will apply early STEM concepts (science, technology, engineering, and math) as they work through the engineering design process and scientific method during each activity.
