This two week course is designed to teach students that the kidney has many functions besides making urine including helping with bone and blood cells and so, healthy kidneys are important!
Class experience
This class explores the genitourinary system: the kidneys, ureters, bladders and urethra. We will explore the main functions of forming urine, excreting urine and why urine formation and excretion is important for our bodies. Additionally, we will highlight the many other functions of the kidneys including regulating blood pressure, producing hormones to help blood cell production and assisting in bone formation. Once they understand how many functions the kidneys have I will then point out...
1) Structure of kidney, ureters, bladder, urethra 2) The many functions of the kidney (urine, blood pressure, bone, blood cells) 2) The importance of urine 3) How we form and excrete urine 5) How we can keep our kidneys healthy
As a family doctor when your patient has kidney disease you have to help them understand their long list of medications! There is nothing as enlightening as seeing this and having to support a patient through it! I therefore always emphasise the importance of a preventative approach with the kidneys. It is better to keep your kidneys healthy than to have to treat them later. It is with this mission that I created this class. I believe that if children can understand the many functions of the kidney they can be encouraged to lead a healthy lifestyle that would promote good kidney health.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
