Do you love the song "Peaches" from the new Super Mario movie? I do too! We are going to learn how to play the song by ear on the piano. This class is designed as a follow-up to my discounted Peaches class, where students learned to play the melody of the chorus. Students who have not taken that course are welcome, but they may have to practice extra after the first lesson to keep up with the group. Students of all experience levels are welcome, from those who have never played a note on the piano to those who have received years of lessons. Beginner students will learn the chorus (and may learn the verse as well). Advanced students will learn the chorus and the verse (and may learn to improvise, or create their own twist, as well). During the first lesson I will assess the strengths and needs of each child. Therefore, the weekly format may look different depending on the learners in the class. However, a sample weekly format would look like: Week 1: Beginners: informal assessment, review the chorus from the one-time class Advanced: informal assessment, review the chorus from the one-time class (both hands) Week 2: Beginners: learn the first half of the verse Advanced: learn the first half of the verse, both hands, with their own twist Week 3: Beginners: learn the second half of the verse Advanced: learn the first half of the verse, both hands, with their own twist Week 4: Beginners: combine the verse and chorus, experiment with left hand patterns Advanced: combine the verse and chorus, both hands, and finalize their own creative twist on the song I believe that students learn best by doing. While I model all of the skills taught in the class, the majority of the class will be spent with the students experimenting in a safe environment and receiving instant feedback. I hope you will enjoy playing Peaches as much as I have! I can't wait to see you in the course.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Maryland Teaching Certificate in Music/Theater/Arts
2 Degrees
Master's Degree in Music or Theatre or Arts from Loyola University Maryland
Bachelor's Degree in Music or Theatre or Arts from SUNY Fredonia
I'm a certified music teacher with over a decade of experience teaching music in the public schools. My Bachelor's Degree (from SUNY Fredonia) is in music education, and my Master's Degree (from Loyola University Maryland) specializes in Kodály Music Education.
My mom was a piano teacher and my dad was a public school music teacher, so in one sense you could say I've always grown up around music and the piano. I had traditional piano lessons growing up and in college. However, around Middle School I discovered that my real love for piano is Boogie Woogie music, the blues, and improvisation. I would have given anything at the time for improvisation instruction; that's one of the reasons why I'm so passionate about passing on my love of piano improvisation with young students today!
