Description
Class Experience
Students will learn how to train their dogs in the commands of watch me, sit/down, take it/leave it, wait, drop/give, stay/come, loose leash walking, and down/down stay.
Space is needed to train dogs. Also, dogs are unpredictable and may not always be ready to learn. Teacher is an AKC Canine Good Citizen (CGC) Evaluator and tester observer with Alliance of Therapy Dogs and has trained and certified five therapy dogs of her own.
Homework assigned will be practicing the commands learned in the training. It will consist of a session of 15-20 minutes practice per day. Students will need to master commands at a rate of 5 out of 5.
Dog, treats, collar, leash, 15-20 foot long lead, and clicker. Dog collars ($5-$10), leashes ($10-$20), long leashes ($10-$20) and clickers ($2-5) may be purchases online or at a pet store. The collar and leash the dog currently has may be appropriate, but for pulling, another collar or leash may be suggested but not mandatory. A rope or two leashes tied together may be used in place of a long lead.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
The student must achieve 5 out of 5 commands done correctly with their dog. On the final session, the student and dog must complete specific skills for graduation.
50 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.
It is recommended puppies be at least 4 months old. Dogs and puppies are unpredictable and train differently. Space is needed to train.
Dog collar, leash and clicker, AKC website.
