Class Experience

🌟 Join us for this ongoing course where students will write lyrics to a pre-existing melody of a popular song we all already know. This songwriting process is called PARODY WRITING, and it's so much fun! All experience levels welcome 🌟

❓Has your child ever been interested in learning how to write songs but didn't know where to start?
❓Have they sat down with a pen and paper but felt overwhelmed or didn’t know if they were writing correctly?
❗️If so, parody writing is the perfect entry point into songwriting!

Songwriting can be so much fun! But it can be a little scary to get started if you’ve never done it before. To help learners feel more comfortable with the idea of taking their thoughts/words and turning them into songs, we're going to practice and get comfortable with songwriting by simplifying the process!

What does this mean? Instead of focusing on each step of songwriting (coming up with ideas, writing lyrics, creating rhymes, thinking of melodies, etc.), we are ONLY going to focus on the WRITING part of songwriting. We'll do this by creating songs to pre-existing melodies of popular songs we all already know! This process is called PARODY WRITING. It's a REALLY fun way to write! And takes some of the pressure off of trying to write a whole song in its entirety from start to finish.

C O U R S E O U T L I N E :

Each week we’ll write a song TOGETHER to different pre-selected melodies. Students will have time to brainstorm ideas of what they want to write about, and as a class we'll choose which topic we will move forward with. I will guide students through the process of coming up with a song idea, journaling about it for a few minutes to get all of our thoughts out and create a word bank, and turning our thoughts into structured stanzas (while matching it to the melody of the song for the week). Students will walk away more comfortable and confident in trying songwriting on their own!

This is a GREAT starting point for learners just starting out in songwriting, but is also a fun exercise for more experienced writers! All are welcome, and students of all levels can benefit form parody writing.

Hi!

My name is Natalie Wees, but in the music world I go by Natalie Duque. I used to think that being the “sensitive” type was a bad thing, until I learned it’s actually my super power! And now I use that super power to tune into my students needs and give them the best learning experience possible where they feel seen and heard while also making strides towards their goals.
