Class Experience

US Grade 6 - 9
In Geometry, understanding parallel lines is fundamental to working with parallelograms, coordinate Geometry, and even congruent triangles.

Learners will learn the following in relation to parallel lines cut by a transversal: corresponding angles, alternate interior angles, same-side interior angles, alternate exterior angles, vertical angles, and linear pairs.

In this flex class, I'll also be teaching the basics of parallel lines, including:
-what the names of the formed angles are called
-how they relate to each other (i.e., are they congruent or supplementary, including those definitions)
-how to create equations to find angle measures
-how to solve those equations using basic Algebra solving of linear equations

Week 1: understand the definitions and connection of parallel lines and transversal, and know the names of the angles that are formed
Week 2: understand the definitions of congruent and supplementary; undertsanding which angles are congruent and which are supplementary; recognizing angle measures based on these connections
Week 3: create and solve equations to find angle measures that include one variable
Week 4: Project week!
Learners create a city map using what they've learned in this course--learners will then include a detailed set of clues for other learners (including myself!) to decode and try to re-create your city without looking at your map.

Using video instruction, I'll teach the lesson each week. Learners will be provided with practice problems, including a detailed answer key.

I'm an involved teacher, and I love working with engaged learners. Learners are encouraged to "turn in" their completed practice if they'd like feedback, or to simply send me a video or written message with any questions they have about the week's content.

I’m a high school math teacher who loves working with students who think they’re bad at math. Questions? Message me anytime.

Learning Goals

Theorems include: vertical angles are congruent; when a transversal crosses parallel lines, alternate interior angles are congruent and corresponding angles are congruent; linear pairs are supplementary.

Supply List
Learners may use colored pencils, crayons, markers, or highlighters for their map project. If they'd prefer to complete the map project digitally, they are welcome to do so. In that case, you may select any format, such as Adobe or Canva...but I don't have any requirements on that part. It's completely up to you.

Learners may want to use a basic calculator (weeks 2 through 4).
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.

Is your learner failing math?

Does your teen say things like…

I can’t do math!
I’ll never get this.
I’m going to fail this math class!
I’m so dumb.

Well, you’re in the right place.

HI! I’m Mary Kennedy, certified math teacher, and I love working with students who struggle with high school math and doubt that they can do it.

I've taught Algebra 1, Geometry, and Algebra 2 and have more than 20 years of teaching experience. My Master's degree is in Learning Disabilities.

In my classes, students connect their learning to critical thinking skills (includes reasoning, analysis, and perseverance) and growth mindset (“I haven’t learned this YET.”).

I strive to make the math concepts accessible to struggling learners.

Help your teen regain confidence and learn the skills they need to pass Algebra.

Don’t let math continue to disrupt your family’s life.

About Mrs. K.
I do life in a tiny tourist town with my husband and three kids (when they're home from college).

Twice, my family has had the unique and wonderful experience of hosting students from Southeast Asia in our home and community. We have maintained friendships with these students and their families for several years now through technology, despite our geographic distance.

I love working with students from every country and encourage their language skills in my math classes.
