Class Experience

Students will improve their ability to write concise paragraphs by writing about their neighborhoods. By looking at their neighborhoods with the "writer's eye," students will improve their critical and creative thinking.
I have taught this course as a college professor at universities in Ecuador and presented this lesson concept at TESOL conferences for English teachers in Ecuador and Peru. I have a Master of Professional Writing, Nonfiction (similar to a MFA) from USC in Los Angeles. As a graduate student, I studied various literary genres and focused on creative nonfiction, where I used elements of fiction writing to enhance my nonfiction writing. I have taught academic writing in English classes in Costa Rica, Ecuador, South Korea, Chile and Japan.
Student will be required to write a paragraph each week on a specific topic that is related to a field trip in their neighborhood. Students will also have to present a 2-minute report on the week's topic during class time.
55 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.
