Class Experience

Students will enjoy this live class because we will discuss everything about our favorite series, Wings of Fire. In order to get learners to want to write, we need to pick a topic they are interested in. Once they understand the logistics of writing, they will be able to write on any topic.

At the beginning of the class, we will play an ice breaker game discussing our favorite dragon tribe, our favorite dragon power and our favorite characters. We will use these ideas to create prompts for the students to work with as they write their paragraphs.

We will then discuss the definition of a main idea sentence and how to write one. We will also discuss supporting evidence and how to use a brainstorming map to organize our ideas. The students will then have an opportunity to see a teacher example before writing their own paragraph. We will finish our paragraph with a conclusion sentence. Students are invited to share their paragraph with the class or can email me after class so I can provide feedback. This class will foster any student's love of writing because they get to choose what they will write about!

Discussion and questions are encouraged and welcomed. However, if your learner just likes to listen, that is fine too. All learners are welcome and respected in my class! I use a combination of visual and auditory instruction so all learning styles can benefit from this class. A no spoilers reminder will be given at the beginning of class.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello! My name is Erica Blackman and I have been an educator for almost 15 years. I graduated from Florida State University in 2006 with a bachelors in English Education. I began my formal teaching career in Washington, D.C. where I taught middle school language arts. I focused on poetry, the short story, African-American literature and writing a research paper. I then moved to Tampa, Florida where I attended the University of South Florida and received my masters in Educational Leadership. I also taught high school English and supported the students as they navigated writing an essay, deciphering Shakespearean works and reading literature from a variety of cultures.

I value teaching because I believe it is the great equalizer for our society. With education and an understanding of literature, students are able to accomplish anything! I knew teaching was for me the very first time I stood in front of a class and watched the students learn something new.

I am also a mother of three children. I love spending time with my family, reading, and traveling. I hope to bring my love of English and literature to as many people as I can!
