The grades offered for this class will be based on a rubric for the RACES format. Students will be assessed on their ability to write a clear and organized paragraph that restates and answers a given prompt, cites meaningful evidence, explains evidence thoroughly, and summarizes the claim.Class Experience

We’ll then dive into a focused lesson on one part of a paragraph: Session 1: Introduction Sentences – Hook your reader! Session 2: Supporting Details – Add depth and description. Session 3: Transition Words & Flow – Connect your ideas seamlessly. Session 4: Concluding Sentences & Celebration – Write a powerful ending and share your best work! By the end of this course, students will have written four complete paragraphs and will get to celebrate their progress by sharing their favorite one with the class. Outlining a Paragraph
Students will be introduced to the rules of basic paragraph writing, and look at a few different paragraph outlines. They will read a series of paragraphs and dissect the author's use of introductory sentences. Then we will choose our first topic and write our first paragraph, including an amazing introductory paragraph

Lesson 2:
Supporting Details
No paragraph is complete without details! Students will explore different ways to add detail to their paragraph depending on the purpose and style. They will then outline a second paragraph - to write on their own time - with great supporting details.

Lesson 3:
Transition Words
Once a paragraph is written, adding transition words can only make it better! Today we focus on adding words and phrases that make our sentences flow. We explore different words that make our paragraph have a different voice. Then we outline our THIRD paragraph - to be written on their own time - with great transition words.

Lesson 4:
Summarizing & writing strong paragraphs
On the last day of class, students will learn how to write a summarizing statement to end their paragraphs. Then, students will practice outlining, researching, and writing a full paragraph on their own. We will finish up with a celebration of all our hard work and share our favorite paragraph from the week. No homework!

Learning Needs
This class is designed to support all learners. It can be especially helpful for those with executive function difficulties related to ADHD, ASD, and other neurodiverse profiles.
Pre-Requisites
Students will be most successful if they are able to construct a simple sentence and write it by hand. Accommodations for those who require speech-to-text or typed responses can be made.
