We will use a hamburger graphic organizer that makes writing fun, and breaks it into simple step-by-step parts, that are easy to follow. The Hamburger Graphic Organizer is a writing organizer that visually outlines the key components of a paragraph. Topic sentence, detail sentences, and a closing sentence are the main elements of a good paragraph, and each one forms a different "piece" of the hamburger. We will discuss the three main components of a paragraph: The introduction (top bun) The supporting details (meat, lettuce, tomato) The conclusion (bottom bun) The students will write a topic sentence that clearly indicates what the whole paragraph is going to be about. Then they will compose several supporting sentences that give more information about the topic. Students will then write a concluding sentence that restates the topic sentence. The lesson is taught through a presentation, discussion, and group & individual activities, where all students are able to participate. Students will be shown examples of well-written paragraphs and we will identify the parts. Then we will write our own paragraphs.
Learning Goals
The students will learn to use the Hamburger Graphic Organizer to write a paragraph that includes an introductory sentence, detail sentences, and a concluding sentence.
