Class Experience

US Grade 3 - 5
Are you looking to give your child the writing tools to be successful when it comes to paragraph writing? Could they benefit from small group instruction with 1:1 time mixed in to help develop and strengthen their writing abilities.

If so, this is the perfect class for your child to grow as a writer. Join this course to learn about the key characteristics of paragraph writing. Your learner will learn and work to develop the skills needed to write a well structured paragraph. Key parts for the paragraph include: indentation, topic sentences, details, and an ending sentence. We also will learn and discuss why paragraphs are needed in writing.

The course is set as ongoing so learners can join at any time. Although each week does have an area of focus for paragraph writing, your learner will be exposed to the essential of paragraph writing every time they attend. The content does not build so that your learner can join in even after a section has begun.

Each week will have an area of focus of paragraph writing. Your learner will have a weekly topic/prompt to help us work through the steps to paragraph writing. During the class, we will have time to examine and share paragraphs so learners gain an understanding of what paragraph writing looks and sounds like to help them become proficient paragraph writers.

As we work each week, your learner will learn a variety of strategies for writing a hook, an exciting beginning sentence meant to grab the reader's attention as well as ways to end your paragraph. We will also touch on the different types of writing (narrative, opinion, descriptive, and how to). We will even reserve time to talk about the importance and editing and revising during our class time. Your learner will have many opportunities to write and interact with other students.

The class will incorporate a variety of activities including writing prompts, breakout rooms, interactive "games", and much more! During breakout room time, your child will have time with other learners to brainstorm ideas as well as receive 1:1 check-ins and guidance about their writing.

Teacher expertise and credentials
I am looking forward to helping your child develop a well-written paragraph. I have taught in the classroom for over 12 years and also worked as an elementary school librarian for 4 years. I enjoy making learning fun and work to engage students in the learning process. My enthusiastic personality and ability to connect with all learners helps to create a positive learning environment. Providing opportunities for student voice and choice gives them ownership over their work. Additionally, with my Master's in Reading as well as my National Board Certification, I am always implementing best practices and literacy to my teaching! This is a great class to build the foundations for writing as a good paragraph can be applied to all subject areas.
