Class Experience

US Grade 3 - 6
Learning to write a proper paragraph with appropriate length and detail can be daunting and sometimes even boring! In this class, students will use their senses and description to create a creative and compelling paragraph that meets the guidelines of a strong and thorough paragraph. We will work through the steps of writing a paragraph together in class. We will work through exercises in class where students will identify parts of a strong paragraph and/or how to make them stronger. Students will also complete exercises in class to practice strong description using their senses by describing items to the class with only descriptions. Students will then apply the knowledge to write their own paragraph after class ends. Students will walk away with a strong 5-7 sentence paragraph that will provide a foundation for strong paragraph writing regardless of topic. Students should be able to write and compose sentences and words with little to no guidance. Students will submit their completed paragraphs after the class for feedback and guidance to help them with further writing projects and assignments.

Learning Goals

Students will improve their understanding of the components of a strong paragraph (length, topic sentence, topic sentence support, concluding sentence).

    Teacher expertise and credentials
As a college instructor, I have come across many adult students who do not know how to compose a strong 5-7 sentence paragraph that focuses on a main idea and discusses that idea thoroughly. There are many classes out there that offer the basics of paragraph writing; however, I plan to cover the same skills while also making the topic and the process fun and engaging. The key to learning writing skills for reluctant writers is to make it fun!
