US Grade 6 - 8
Beginner Level
A well-written paragraph is the building block to all other writing. In this three day course, students will learn basic paragraph writing techniques and practice using them to write narrative, informative, and opinion paragraphs. Each day will walk learners through steps to writing paragraphs, and then we will apply them to a specific type of paragraph. Learners vote on topic options and then we write the paragraph together; students are not asked to write independently or share their writing. This class is highly practical, with lots of discussion and hands-on practice. We will cover the entire paragraph writing process, including brainstorming, organizing, topic sentences, supporting details, and concluding sentences. Day 1: Narrative Paragraphs, writing about a personal experience Day 2: Informative Paragraphs, writing about facts (these are the most common paragraphs found in school assignments) Day 3: Opinion Paragraphs, writing about personal opinions and supporting those opinions clearly Students have the option to write a paragraph on their own between meetings, and are welcome to send it to me for personalized feedback. Learners who choose to do this will receive a personalized video response detailing strengths and areas of improvement in the student's writing. Learners will leave this course with a greater understanding of how to write paragraphs, and greater confidence in their writing ability. In order to do well in this class students should know how to write sentences easily. This camp is great for reluctant or struggling writers. The content of this course is also offered in a weekly class where students are able to stop and start at any time.
