Class Experience

Paper is my passion! It is a versatile and almost universally available material, which makes it perfect for crafting. In this club students will learn how to manipulate paper into 3D art forms. Sometimes we will create scenes, such as fireworks in the night sky over a canoe on a lake. Other times we’ll create interesting 3D artworks such as flowers in paper boxes, or robots. The sky is the limit with paper sculpture.

This class is a great mix of creativity, engineering, geometry, and most importantly fun! It will be a fun, easy going, and interactive club. I always encourage artists to put their own creative twists on their work, or they are welcome to follow me step by step.

Each week we will complete a project together based on the season, nearest holiday, the classes latest interests, etc. Students will be asked for input when planning future projects.

May 23: Abstract Sculptures
May 30: Paper Flowers & Boxes
June 6: Robots
June 13: Camping Scene

Parental Guidance
Your child will be using scissors and glue in this class. Please ensure that their scissors are the appropriate size for their hands. I find small, sharp scissors to give the best results when kids are learning to make precise cuts. Please supervise your child while using scissors and glue as you see appropriate.
Supply List
Each week students will need:
One sturdy piece of card stock as the base for their sculpture,
Various colors construction paper or card stock (I suggest a variety pack of colors in size 8.5x11 or 9x12 - also, if you have a paper scraps bin this is a great way to use some up!)
Small, sharp scissors that fit comfortably in your learners hand (will give best results for precise cutting)
Glue stick
School glue
Small paint brush
Pencil
Tape
Stapler (occassionally)
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello, friends! My name is Amy Sloan and I am an artist and a teacher. My degree may be in Photojournalism, but it’s painting, drawing, sculpting, and crafting that I adore and seek to share with art lovers of all ages!

My teaching philosophy mirrors that of the late, great Bob Ross, who helped inspire my own growth mindset by teaching that there are no mistakes in art, only happy accidents.

I currently teach arts and crafts in an after school/summer camp program for middle school students. I have further experience teaching jewelry making and illustration to both children and adults. And I am also the mother of a budding kindergarten artist!

I have been teaching on Outschool for over a year now and I love meeting new friends from around the globe and sharing what I know with them. I can’t wait to share all of my artistic tips and tricks with your student! Let’s make something beautiful!
