Paper Collage Cut-Outs: Outer Space Adventures
Class experience
In this class, students will create a unique paper cut-out collage featuring planets, stars, galaxies, and other cool objects from outer space. We'll talk about the different types of paper one can use in collage and how everyday scraps can be repurposed into art. I will guide students as they decorate their papers, then show them ways to cut, trim, shape, refine, and/or add detail to their forms. We'll discuss color and texture, as well as ideas of balance, harmony, and the importance of...
After this class, students will have a unique piece of collage art to display. Beyond that, they will also have an enhanced artistic eye, with greater appreciation for the way that color, pattern, and shape work together. They will have increased awareness of their own artistic style, and the confidence to develop that style by utilizing items they may not previously have considered.
I have been captivated by paper cutout collage as an art form since my first introduction to Henri Matisse in middle school. In 2017, I began selling my own collage art to friends and family, and in 2019, I launched Bramble Schell Studio, my design business where I create stickers, greeting cards, and prints, as well as digital pattern and surface work.
- scissors - glue stick - heavy paper to use as a background surface (watercolor or mixed media paper, cardboard, or small poster board are great) - different types of paper for collaging (printer paper, construction paper, origami paper, scrap paper, wrapping paper, pages from old books or magazines, etc. For this project, shiny paper and even aluminum foil also work especially well. No need to purchase anything; papers found around the house will be just fine.) We will be decorating these papers in class, but if students would like to begin this step ahead of time, they are they are welcome to do so. - crayons, colored pencils, sharpies, gel pens, metallic pens (Again, there's no need to purchase new. It's all about using whatever you have.) - tissues and water in case of mishaps - optional: glitter glue
Parental guidance is required, as students will be using scissors.
