Class Experience

In this class, we will focus on color mixing and developing three different paintings covering the major categories of styles in art history.

Different methods we will explore together include:

Color Theory - We will focus on learning about color mixing, chroma intensity, value creation and color tilting by spending combining different colors. You will create your own color chart, to include a color wheel, for reference throughout the course.
Realism - a method of painting that focuses on trying to make the painting look as real as possible. We will discover techniques artists use to create realistic qualities in a variety of objects and compositions.
Impressionism - a method of painting that uses movement, color, and the play of light on a surface to guide the painting process. Discover how Van Gogh, Monet, and Seurat created their beautiful and vibrant works by creating a piece of your own.
Abstraction - a method of painting that focuses on multiple techniques for taking objects, settings and people and manipulating them into an abstract work of art. Learn how Picasso and Kandinsky come up with their ideas and discover six different ways to create an abstract work of your own.

The coursework will be completed using acrylic paint.

No background knowledge is required for this course, just a love for art!

For homework, students will need to spend between 1 and 2 hours per week developing a final artwork, using the instructions/discussion from the week, that will be provided in a video at the beginning of each week. Learner progress will be evaluated through in progress photos of their work and correspondence with the teacher about progression during the creation process throughout the week. The teacher will provide feedback and guidance as the student works through their projects.

This is a self-paced class with no live meetings. Students will be provided videos and instruction for each lesson and skills to practice. The teacher will provide feedback to student work within a day of posting. Students are encouraged to pace themselves to one lesson a week, but can spend as much time as needed to complete the projects.

Artist. Teacher. Mother.
Hello! I am an art educator that has a passion for teaching all things art related. My experiences include teaching painting/drawing, photography, graphic design, sewing, sculpture, and art history to all ages (Kindergarten thru College). My goal with each student is to not only teach them how to improve their skill and knowledge, but how to think creatively and reflect themselves in their artwork.
My background includes a Bachelors of Art Education through Towson University and a Masters of Art Education through Boston University.
I am an active artist myself; frequently showing work in exhibits and working on various painting and graphic design commissions. I feel that in order to be a successful and current art educator, it is important to constantly be working as a professional artist in the field and to bring that knowledge and experience into the classroom.
I look forward to teaching your developing artists!
