Explore the fantasy world of poetry by reading a poem and then transforming it into a work of art. Together, we will read and discuss the poem, Jabberwocky, by Lewis Carroll. In this class, students will learn: - Type of poem - Vocabulary and nonsense words - Imagery - Identifying mood and setting -Line drawing and basic shading (pencil) - Watercolor painting techniques After our discussion, students will be given time to paint a watercolor painting that is inspired by the poem. I will be demonstrating different watercolor techniques (washes, filling, splatters, layering and blending). For this particular class, the character we will be drawing/painting is "the Jabberwock", and students will be encouraged to come up with their own version of this imaginary creature. I will demonstrate basic shapes and ideas (head, wings, tail, legs, etc), but will not require or expect students to copy step-by-step unless they want to.

Supply List
A printout of the poem is provided but it is not necessary to print out unless it is helpful to the student. Students will need their own set of watercolor paints, and brushes in several different sizes. They will also need a piece of watercolor paper (note: watercolor paper is different from drawing paper. It is much thicker and better suited for watercolor paints. A pad of Canson XL Watercolor paper is available at Walmart and Amazon for about $5-6) or a small canvas. Students will also need a cup of water and a few dry paper towels.
