Class Experience

(Please note that this class is focused on learning art history, with a simple drawing activity done in the last 5-10 minutes of class. It isn’t intended to be an art technique lesson or drawing tutorial, and students will not be painting.)

Creating art is so much more than just putting paint on paper! In this class, students will learn how Expressionist artists sought to convey emotion with their art. Throughout class, we will discuss topics such as:

- When and where did the Expressionist art movement occur?
- What are the characteristics of Expressionist art?
- How is Expressionism different from other art movements?
- What were the artist’s intentions when creating Expressionism pieces?
- What techniques did Expressionist artists use to convey emotion through their art?
- Who are some famous Expressionist artists, and what are the most famous Expressionist
works?

At the end of class, students will be able to draw and share an Expressionist piece of their own.

My teaching style is discussion-based and very interactive! Although I use slides to present information, I do not read them to the students, lecture-style! I will ensure that every student has the chance to answer questions and share their thoughts.
*If you would prefer that I don’t call on your child unless they volunteer, please let me know! I want everyone to feel comfortable in class.

Thank you for considering my class. Feel free to reach out with any questions!

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello! Thank you for visiting me on Outschool!

~ My Background ~
I’ve worked with kids in many capacities for over 20 years. I've been a camp counselor, reading tutor, Girl Scout leader, Destination Imagination coach, and volunteer extensively in my kids schools (outside of Covid-times, anyway.) I’ve taught ESL online for almost 3 years with VIPKid, and my husband and I have 4 daughters of our own (ages 13, 12, 6 & 3.) Needless to say, I love working with kids!

~ What I Teach ~
I am passionate about learning and teaching about art history and art appreciation. I previously implemented a very successful supplementary art education program at my childrens' elementary school - many of my Outschool lessons are based on classes I taught in this program (which is currently on hold due to covid.) I love watching kids experience art with their young and open minds, and encouraging them to see and think about art in different ways. In today's STEM-heavy educational world, I believe that there is also a great value in also learning about the fine arts!

I also love teaching kids about plants and animals! I’ve loved learning about animals my whole life and have had nearly every type of pet there is over the years. My household currently includes a dog, 5 cats, 3 frogs, and a fish. I also have around 50 houseplants and am active in plant education, collecting, and trading groups.

I also find it so rewarding working with emerging readers. I was previously a trained reading tutor at a local elementary school (the program is on hold due to covid, but I plan to continue!) and I work with readers of various levels every day as an ESL teacher.

I hope to have the chance to meet your child in class soon! Please reach out if you have any questions at all.

**Missed Classes/Class Transfer Requests**
I get it, life happens! If your child misses class, you are welcome to view the recording at your convenience. I am also happy to answer any follow-up questions that your child might have about the material - just message me.
However, I can only accommodate class transfer requests if they are made 24+ hours before the class begins. Please know that it is very common for students to miss class, and just not feasible for most teachers to allow each one to have a free spot in a future section. Thank you for your understanding!
