Class Experience

In this ongoing weekly class we will practice our watercolor skills by painting something new each week with watercolor paints. The best way to get good at anything is practice, so that is what we are going to do here! You'll learn some new skills, use some you already have and learn to create beautiful watercolor paintings. Every painting you do is a step toward being a master at this medium.
I will lead you step by step in your drawing and painting.
The drawing will be simple for those who are comfortable with drawing, and I will provide a template for those who don't want to draw freehand. (This is not a drawing class so use the template if you cannot follow along easily)
I will show you how to keeps those colors from running into each other and that sometimes you want to let them run into each. You will use techniques like washes, wet in wet, dry brush and more.
We'll talk about colors as we work, learning about warm and cool colors, how to mix to get just the right shade and color schemes to know which ones look good together.
                                                                                                  VOTING
Each week we will paint a new subject that will be determined by the students. I use google slides to show reference photos of a wide range of subjects such as , flowers, fruit, vegetables, insects, landscapes, birds, etc. You will vote on what you would like to paint and the result of the voting will be what we paint the following week.
You will have the opportunity to earn extra votes to try to sway the voting and paint just what you want.
                                                                                               CHALLENGE
Extra votes can be earned by doing a weekly challenge that will be given at the end of class. Bring the completed challenge to next week's class and that's one extra vote for you. The challenge will help you practice more what you learn over the week.
                                                                                               SHARE BOARD
You can also earn extra votes by sharing your artwork on the Share Board. The Share Board is a place where you can share your artwork and take a look at what others are doing. Like and comment your positive feedback so we can encourage each other in our art journey.

Other Details

Parental Guidance
I have created a board on Padlet.com where students can take a picture of their artwork and post it for other students to see. The goal here is to have a showcase of their artwork, for them to feel proud of their work and to learn to give positive feedback to each other. I put the link to the Board in the classroom each week. You do not have to have an account on Padlet to use it, but if you do great!
Supply List
A set of watercolor paints
If you have a large inexpensive set that will do just fine.
If you have tubes of specific colors You should at least have
                           Red, Blue, Yellow
Ideally you would want 2 reds , 2 blues 2 yellows and secondaries, purple , green and orange along with burnt sienna.
I will be using cotman watercolors ( link below)
                             Paint brushes
A couple round brushes is all you need.
One medium size around #8 or #10 and a smaller around #2 size. I’ve provided a link below of brushes I will be using, you can get these at Michael’s I do believe. You do not have to get these brands just make sure the bristles are kind of firm, when you bend the bristles they should snap back and keep a round shape and pointed tip.
                                         Paper
You have to have watercolor paper to paint on or you will not be able to get the desired outcome. I will be using a small pad of strathmore watercolor paper cold press 5.5 x 8. (Link below)

Teacher expertise and credentials
I am a full time artist completely in love with creating art , I paint daily and sell my paintings locally and online.
I have enjoyed drawing since I was a child and have always had a sketchbook nearby but never took an art class until my late 20's. One oil painting class and I was off, learning everything I could, using as many art materials as I could get my hands on.
A fearless desire to try new art techniques and mediums has driven me to learn art on my own, no formal training , although I have learned a lot from some talented online art teachers.
It is exciting, inspiring, empowering to learn that you can create something beautiful with just your hands, your mind and a few simple tools.
I would become stagnant if I did not have an outflow for this creativity, so I teach!! I love sharing what I have learned with others. I am willing to teach whatever I am learning and creating so expect a variety of classes.
I taught art in a private school to grades K-12 for 2 years. I have also taught art and sewing lessons in my home. I was a homeschool mom for several years and taught art at our homeschool co-op to ages 6-13.
I think that online learning is a huge asset to the the young artist. Being that I have learned a lot online myself I know from a students perspective.
With close up cameras, a smart pen, sharing abilities in Zoom, printables and whatever else it takes , I am able to really focus the student on what they see, learning to see details and put them down on canvas or paper.
I believe every artist is at a different place in his or her learning process and needs to work right there in that place. No comparisons to others or mine. Mistakes are welcomed and hopefully turned into a new and unexpected beauty in the art.
My hope is that my students enjoy the process of learning and creating art as much as I do and that I can help make that happen.
