Class Experience

In this week long, 5 part course, we will focus on a variety of different acrylic painting techniques and work on paint 5 lovely paintings over the course of 5 days. (see attachment for photos)

On top of acrylic painting techniques, learners will also learn about basic composition and lighting.

Class 1: SUNSET and ABSTRACT: This painting focuses on making a smooth gradient, applying brush texture and fine detail painting.

Class 2: UNDERWATER SILHOUETTE: This class covers blending, wash, and detail and composition. We will also work to finish our abstract painting this class.

Class 3: EMUE: This class covers dry brushstrokes, loose blending, directional brushstroke painting and fine detail work.

Class 4: CHICKADEE ON A BRANCH (part 1): This class covers underpainting and composition.

Class 5: CHICKADEE ON A BRANCH (part 2): This class covers light/shadow, textural painting and fine detail. These are step by step sessions. I will paint along with my learners and pause for questions after each step. Learners will be following along with me as we paint and interact.

Every class gets slightly more difficult and introduces a technique that will be used in the next class.

This is a great course for “seasoned” beginners and artists who already know how to paint but want to experiment with acrylics. Students don't need a lot of painting experience, but ideally they will used acrylics a few times before this class.
Learning Goals
Acrylic painting techniques: Blending, dabbing, wash, textural painting, dry brush, palate knife, directional brushstroke work, abstract, and fine detail painting.

On top of acrylic painting techniques, learners will also learn about basic composition and lighting.

Patience and persistence: Art is a lot of fun, and part of that fun is a rollercoaster of successes and struggles. Students who complete a 5 part class will (hopefully) challenge themselves enough to make mistakes, learn from them, and grow as artists.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Bachelor's Degree from Alberta College of Arts and Design
I love to teach art, and specialize in drawing (wide variety of styles and techniques), procreate, watercolour, and acrylic painting. When I teach, I like to lead by example. This means that I draw, paint and create with my students. Throughout class I make myself available for questions, assistance and feedback.

I’ve been teaching art for over 5 years, and I have been creating art professionally since 2011. I have illustrated marketing materials for Denny’s, Newman’s Own, Duane Reade, Discovery Children’s Museum, The Mendes Foundation and other clients.

I also have extensive experience in advertising. I’ve been working as an art director (now creative director) for over 17 years. I worked in New York City for 10 years, Cambodia for one, and I currently work remotely out of my home office in Canada. In my advertising career I've made TV commercials, print campaigns, radio spots, online ads, videos and billboards (even some in Time Square.) I love thinking of cool ideas and bringing them to life. I am excited to share this skill with my students.

I believe that art is more than an applicable workplace skill. Art is a form of healthy self-expression and personal reflection. I also believe that art teaches the importance of patience and persistence. It is an education for the mind and soul.

For me, art is meditative. I own dozens of sketchbooks filled with drawings I’ve done throughout the years. Many pages contains a memory, emotion, thought or experience. As a mother, I find additional inspiration through my daughter and new son.

Art is everywhere, if you look for it. Children especially have a gift for finding beauty in the world. I hope to harness this gift so every child in my class can find their own unique, artistic voice.
