Beginner Level
In this 4 week self paced class we will learn about 4 different artists (Braque, Dufy, Rivera, Derain) and create art pieces that are inspired by their work. We will talk about their genre of art, create pieces to be proud of, and learn about the artists. Learners will post pictures and/or video of their work (and their works in progress) on the classroom page so that the teacher can give feedback and encouragement on their pieces. Here are the highlights for each week! Week 1 - Georges Braque - We will discuss his life and his friendship and the influence fellow artist Pablo Picasso and the cubism movement that they created. We will discuss his piece called Paysage de Provence, l'Estaque (Property of a Gentleman) and students will then create their own masterpiece using crayon and watercolor based on his painting. We will talk about color, composition, creativity, and also the proper use of materials and clean up. The students will be able to create their piece based on Property of a Gentleman, but in their own style and with their own personality and creativity. They will post pictures of their work on the classroom page so that the teacher can give feedback and encouragement to each learner. Week 2 - Raoul Dufy - We will talk about Dufy's life, his inspirations, and some of his most famous works. Not only was he a fine artist, but he also had a great reputation as an illustrator and commercial artist. He is an intriguing artist that we don't always hear about but his paintings are full of life and color. We will recreate his work called Bateaux Pavoisés (Flag Boats) ,and look at his use of bright colors and line in this beautiful painting. Week 3 - Diego Rivera - We will have fun exploring the artist Diego Rivera. We will be looking at his mural artwork around the US and Mexico and explore his piece called The Peasants. We'll talk about his wife (Frida Kahlo) and how their work influenced each other. We will re-create his beautiful artwork using crayon and watercolor and students will have fun adding their own creativity to their piece. Week 4 - Andre Derain - During this week we will look at the artist Andre Derain. He is a lesser known Fauvism artist to most of us but his work is full of fun color and life. He is a French artist who painted in the fauvism (wild beast) style much like the more famous artist Henri Matisse. We will re-create one of his pieces using watercolor and crayon. The classes will be step by step allowing time for each learner to create their piece and be proud of what they create. The videos will be clear and provide at least 2 angles. Please note that in the videos I may reference the class as a "flex class". Outschool has changed the name (and format) of flex classes and they are now called "self paced" classes. I'm sorry for any confusion that this may cause! No experience is needed, but some parental help could be needed with the painting parts if the student is younger. Please look at the supplies list for everything needed for these lessons!

I am excited to join Outschool as an art teacher! I LOVE art!
I have a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Art from the University of Central Florida with a concentration in painting. I have been teaching private art lessons for 25 years and have been teaching in the classroom for 19 years. I have taught pre school age through High School AP Drawing and AP 2D Design and everything in between.
I have 3 kids (ages 24, 22 and 13) and live in Orlando, Florida where I enjoy photography and streetpainting (chalk art) in my down time. I am a member of the Central Florida Chalk Artists Association and enjoy doing chalk art for events and non-profits. My daughter and I were actually featured on our local TV station back in April which was a lot of fun!
I love teaching students the art skills to be successful! I love to see students who think they can’t draw or paint find success and love what they created and be proud of it!
I like to engage students at their level and help them feel comfortable being creative, have a great time, learn about art even if they don’t realize they are learning along the way. I love to see the AHA moments they have when they create something they thought might be unachievable.
I think that students thrive when they start where they are and have lots of encouragement along the way! I am excited to be able to bring this to students around the country and the world!
