Class Experience

US Grade Kindergarten - 3
In this 4 week flexible schedule class we will learn about 4 different artists (Monet, Matisse, Van Gogh and Kandinsky) and create art pieces that are inspired by their work. We will talk about their genre of art, create pieces to be proud of, and learn about the artists through interactive games and scavenger hunts.

Learners will post pictures and/or video of their work (and their works in progress) on the classroom page so that fellow learners and the teacher can give feedback and encouragement on their pieces. It will be uplifting and helpful to the students and peer feedback will be fun!
Students will also engage with each other in art scavenger hunts, fun trivia and games about the artists we will be talking about each week!
Here are the highlights for each week!

Week 1 - Claude Monet - We will discuss his life and the new genre he created called Impressionism. We will talk about his piece called The Japanese Bridge, and then students will create their own Japanese Bridge masterpiece using crayon and watercolor. We will talk about color, composition, creativity, and also the proper use of materials and clean up. The students will be able to create their piece based on The Japanese Bridge, but in their own style and with their own personality and creativity. They will post pictures of their work on the classroom page so that we can give feedback and encouragement to each learner.

Week 2 - Henri Matisse - We will discuss his various works and his life as a painter and also with his later works in collage. We will talk about Fauvism and his innovative use of color. The students will create a Matisse painting based on his masterpiece called the Goldfish using crayon and watercolor. We'll talk about how color can be unrealistic or realistic and how his genre (Fauvism) changed the world of art at that time. Students will also have a chance to do some fun extra games with each other that involve Matisse cut out art.

Week 3 - Vincent Van Gogh - We will have fun exploring the artist Vincent Van Gogh. We will have fun looking at his bold use of color and his interesting life (age appropriate of course) . We'll talk about his era called Post Impressionism and how his art was under appreciated at the time. We will re-create his famous work Starry Night using crayon and watercolor and students will have fun adding their own creativity to their piece. We will play a few interactive games that are Van Gogh themed as well as interaction with their art pieces with each other and the teacher.

Week 4 - Wassily Kandinsky - During this week we will look at the Russian artist Kandinsky. We will look at how music influences art and how Kandinsky created his abstract and expressionism pieces. We will discuss abstract art and our opinions on this genre of art. We will re-create his piece Red, Yellow, Blue piece using marker, watercolor and crayon. We will do a scavenger hunt related to the art of Kandinsky.

The classes will be step by step allowing time for each learner to create their piece and be proud of what they create. The videos will be clear and provide at least 2 angles.

No experience is needed, but some parental help could be needed with the painting parts if the student is younger.

Please look at the supplies list for everything needed for these lessons!

I am excited to join Outschool as an art teacher! I LOVE art!
I have a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Art from the University of Central Florida with a concentration in painting. I have been teaching private art lessons for 25 years and have been teaching in the classroom for 19 years. I have taught pre school age through High School AP Drawing and AP 2D Design and everything in between.
I have 3 kids (ages 24, 22 and 13) and live in Orlando, Florida where I enjoy photography and streetpainting (chalk art) in my down time. I am a member of the Central Florida Chalk Artists Association and enjoy doing chalk art for events and non-profits. My daughter and I were actually featured on our local TV station back in April which was a lot of fun!
I love teaching students the art skills to be successful! I love to see students who think they can’t draw or paint find success and love what they created and be proud of it!
I like to engage students at their level and help them feel comfortable being creative, have a great time, learn about art even if they don’t realize they are learning along the way. I love to see the AHA moments they have when they create something they thought might be unachievable.
I think that students thrive when they start where they are and have lots of encouragement along the way! I am excited to be able to bring this to students around the country and the world!
