Class Experience

US Grade 1 - 4
In this 4 week flexible schedule class we will learn about 4 different artists (Alma Thomas, Piet Mondrian, Andy Warhol, and Katsushika Hokusai) and create art pieces that are inspired by their work. We will talk about their genre of art, create pieces to be proud of, and learn about the artists through interactive games and scavenger hunts.

Learners will post pictures and/or video of their work (and their works in progress) on the classroom page so that fellow learners and the teacher can give feedback and encouragement on their pieces. It will be uplifting and helpful to the students and peer feedback will be fun!
Students will also engage with each other in art scavenger hunts, fun trivia and games about the artists we will be talking about each week!
Here are the highlights for each week!

Week 1 - Alma Thomas - We will discuss her life as an art educator as well has her art work and the influences in her life. We will discuss her color and how her abstract art depicted events at the time period and other influences. The students will be able to create their piece based on one of her pieces pieces, but in their own style and with their own personality and creativity. They will post pictures of their work on the classroom page so that we can give feedback and encouragement to each learner.

Week 2 - Andy Warhol - We will discuss his various works and his life as a artist of the 1980s. We will talk about his work and his struggles and his breakthroughs with his art. The students will create an Andy Warhol painting based on his zebra piece using crayon and watercolor. Students will also have a chance to do some fun extra games with each other that involve his work and his life.

Week 3 - Piet Mondrian - We will have fun exploring the artist Piet Mondrian. We will have fun looking at his bold use of color and his famous work as well as some of his lesser known works . We will re-create one of his beautiful abstract paintings using marker, crayon and watercolor and students will have fun adding their own creativity to their piece. We will play a few interactive games that are Impressionist themed as well as interaction with their art pieces with each other and the teacher.

Week 4 - During this week we will look at the Japanese artist Katsushika Hokusai. We will look at his beautiful art and prints and discuss his influence on art even in the European world. We will discuss these eras of art and our opinions on this genre of art. We will re-create his piece called The Great Wave off Kanagawa using watercolor and crayon. We will do a some fun activities related to the artist during the week.

The classes will be step by step allowing time for each learner to create their piece and be proud of what they create. The videos will be clear and provide at least 2 angles.

No experience is needed, but some parental help could be needed with the painting parts if the student is younger.

Please look at the supplies list for everything needed for these lessons!

I am excited to join Outschool as an art teacher! I LOVE art!
I have a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Art from the University of Central Florida with a concentration in painting. I have been teaching private art lessons for 25 years and have been teaching in the classroom for 19 years. I have taught pre school age through High School AP Drawing and AP 2D Design and everything in between.
I have 3 kids (ages 24, 22 and 13) and live in Orlando, Florida where I enjoy photography and streetpainting (chalk art) in my down time. I am a member of the Central Florida Chalk Artists Association and enjoy doing chalk art for events and non-profits. My daughter and I were actually featured on our local TV station back in April which was a lot of fun!
I love teaching students the art skills to be successful! I love to see students who think they can’t draw or paint find success and love what they created and be proud of it!
I like to engage students at their level and help them feel comfortable being creative, have a great time, learn about art even if they don’t realize they are learning along the way. I love to see the AHA moments they have when they create something they thought might be unachievable.
I think that students thrive when they start where they are and have lots of encouragement along the way! I am excited to be able to bring this to students around the country and the world!
