Class Experience

It's October which means it is sPoOkY sEaSoN 🎃 👻🦇 In this class, I will show learners how to draw and paint a haunted house scene complete with ghosts, a full moon, flying bats, creepy eyes, and more! As students follow along, I will show how we can use basic shapes and lines to create a one-of-a-kind haunted house, and then discuss different watercolor techniques to bring it to life! Watercolor techniques will include: how to properly load up a paint brush, brush strokes, wet on wet and wet on dry, layering, properly taping down papers, etc.
I call my teaching style "Bob Ross" style, where students paint along while I paint and talk about what we are doing. This is a great class for beginners.
Halloween costumes are encouraged but not required 😄

Learning Goals

Students will learn various techniques which will allow them to have the confidence and skills to create their own works of watercolor art in the future. Watercolor techniques will include: wet-on-wet, wet-on-dry, taping down paper, properly hydrating your watercolor paint, and color mixing and layering.

Supply List
This supply list includes recommendations and brands I like, as well as everyday objects you can find around the house. I believe in using what you've got- no need to break the bank!

WATERCOLOR PAINT SET with red, yellow, blue, black, and white (more colors are fine too): I recommend a paint palette, higher quality paint that comes in tubes can get extra messy and it's more difficult to measure out an appropriate amount. Plus you've got a built in palette for mixing colors. You can also use a Tupperware lid or plate for mixing paint.

WATERCOLOR PAINT BRUSH: I recommend round tips ones, they're great for both wide brush strokes and fine lines. Sizes #2-10 will work great, nothing smaller or larger is necessary.

WATERCOLOR PAPER: 8x10 is a good size, nothing larger than 11x14

- painters tape (for taping down paper)
- table that can get messy

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello there! Welcome to my page. My name is Lauren, and I love to create and inspire young creative minds.
My main medium of choice is watercolor but I enjoy creating with whatever materials are readily available and I encourage my students to do the same. It is amazing what you can use around the house to create art!

In class, we draw inspiration from nature, music, and artists from around the world (and throughout history!). I enjoy teaching a range of skill and developmental levels and believe that art can be beneficial for learning, expression, and connection with others and the world around us.

I have a BA in Design Studies from North Carolina State University where I gained valuable skills in visual communication and creative problem-solving. Before I went full-time as an artist, I worked as a graphic designer for my local town, fighting bad design and comic sans monsters (a.ka., designing digital and print material for cultural arts programs and exhibitions). Before my superhero work as a graphic designer, I was an educator at a children's science museum where I worked with a team of expert scientists and educators to teach children a range of topics from astronomy to wildlife conservation. My experience there rekindled a childlike wonder in me and a desire to help kids find joy in learning. I believe play is an important aspect of learning, and I strive to make my classes as fun and engaging as possible!

My method is to introduce the topic, provide some demonstration and inspiration, and then let the learner learn by doing. I like to encourage lots of experimenting and believe there are no mistakes when it comes to painting, just "happy accidents", to quote one of my favorite exemplars (thanks Bob Ross!).

I am a goofy, encouraging, and patient teacher who will do my best to give learners the confidence and skills they need to create their own works of watercolor art! I look forward to meeting you!
