Class Experience

US Grade 5 - 8
Beginner - Intermediate Level
Through the guided painting process, students will learn how to paint in wet-on-wet technique and add simple silhouette shapes.

My teaching style involves breaking the process down into smaller, easy-to-follow steps. I pace the class according to the needs of the students; if needed, I give fast finishers a break, allowing students who need more time to complete their work, the time to do so, and even then, finishing before class ends is NOT the objective. The examples in the picture are only suggestive; students may also request a particular favorite if time allows.

My classes are intended to be fun, informative, and a safe place to take artistic risks and make mistakes--that is experimentation, which artists do all the time!

At the end of class, students will be invited to share their creations no matter what their progress is.

More detailed information regarding this class can be found in the syllabus.

Other Details

Supply List
Watercolor paper (1-2 sheets of 8X10, 9X12 or 11X14, pre-cut into 4 equal pieces). I always plan to paint 4 small galaxy backgrounds with different color combinations. I recommend Canson brand.

Watercolor paint: I recommend Crayola, Prang or Sargent Art in the oval pans, OR the kind that comes in small tubes.

Paint brushes (variety: I like round, size 6 or 7 for this project, plus round, size 2 or 3 for small details).

**PLEASE** Make sure you have watercolor paper and good quality watercolor paints. Other papers, especially cardstock, are not surface treated for watercolor and will cause the student to become frustrated.

Likewise, acrylic paints do not work well for this because they will not flow like watercolor.

However, two optional colors of acrylic are recommended for session 2: black for the landscape silhouettes (although black watercolor will work fine) and white for stars if the student wishes.

As a licensed art teacher, I have developed techniques for breaking down painting lessons into simple, easy-to-follow steps. Once we get the basics done, I give my students freedom to complete their project using their own imagination, thereby giving them the opportunity to take what I have taught them to a different, fun and creative level.
