Class experience

US Grade 8 - 11
The purpose of this course is threefold:
To provide students with a small, nurturing environment in which to explore some of the great works of literature;
To help students navigate assigned summer/supplemental reading assignments with minimal reliance on “shortcut” resources; and
To expand students’ working vocabularies, comfort with sometimes-intimidating works of literature, and general facility with literary analysis and reading comprehension.
I have nearly 20 years of experience as a high school Language Arts teacher; I have taught students of all high school ages as well as all learning styles and needs. I also have more than 10 years of experience as a one-to-one tutor focusing on writing, test prep (ACT, SAT, PSAT, etc.), and reading comprehension. I've taught on the college level as well.
Homework Offered
Students will complete assigned reading in preparation for each class meeting.
2 - 4 hours per week outside of class
Assessments Offered
Participation in discussions.
Grades Offered
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Parents should familiarize themselves with the specific content and themes of the work we're studying. Depending on the piece of literature, students may encounter adult themes, foul language, and violence. When these issues arise, they will be handled with sensitivity and candidness.
Most of the literature with which we’ll be working is available (in whole or in part) online. However, it is highly recommended that students have a physical copy of the novel to allow for annotation.
