Session 1: We begin by briefly introducing ourselves and discussing what we’d like to accomplish in this Book Club. We’ll then discuss the author of the work and any historical/cultural context needed for informed study of the work. Each week there will be a reading assignment; students must have this assigned reading finished by the start of class. The purpose of this course is threefold: To provide students with a small, nurturing environment in which to explore some of the great works of literature; To help students navigate assigned summer/supplemental reading assignments with minimal reliance on “shortcut” resources; and To expand students’ working vocabularies, comfort with sometimes-intimidating works of literature, and general facility with literary analysis and reading comprehension.
I have nearly 20 years of experience as a high school Language Arts teacher; I have taught students of all high school ages as well as all learning styles and needs. I also have more than 10 years of experience as a one-to-one tutor focusing on writing, test prep (ACT, SAT, PSAT, etc.), and reading comprehension. I've taught on the college level as well.

Parents should familiarize themselves with the specific content and themes of the work we're studying. Depending on the piece of literature, students may encounter adult themes, foul language, and violence. When these issues arise, they will be handled with sensitivity and candidness.
Most of the literature with which we’ll be working is available (in whole or in part) online. However, it is highly recommended that students have a physical copy of the novel to allow for annotation.
