What's included

Homework
2-4 hours per week. Students are expected to read the assigned chapters, complete reading comprehension questions and vocabulary. The number of pagers varies based on the book. The homework should take about 2 hours to complete each week, depending on the reader. **Please contact the instructor for accommodations :).
Assessment
Each class students will play Blooket to check reading comprehension. Instructor will reach out if scores are below 70%.

Reading isnโ€™t just an essential skillโ€”itโ€™s an adventure! In this middle school book club, students will dive into a selection of thought-provoking and classic novels, exploring themes of friendship, identity, resilience, and discovery. Through guided reading, interactive discussions, and engaging activities, students will strengthen their reading comprehension, vocabulary, and literary analysis skills.

Throughout this course, students will explore the following novels:

๐Ÿ“– Walk Two Moons by Sharon Creech โ€“ A moving journey of self-discovery and storytelling
๐Ÿ“– The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton โ€“ A classic tale of belonging, identity, and social divisions
๐Ÿ“– The Giver by Lois Lowry โ€“ A thought-provoking dystopian novel about memory and choice
๐Ÿ“– A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine Lโ€™Engle โ€“ A science fiction adventure exploring courage and love

โœ”๏ธ An introductory video from the instructor, providing background information
โœ”๏ธ Interactive activities to reinforce key concepts

๐Ÿ“Œ Each class session includes:
โœ”๏ธ A review of comprehension questions, vocabulary, plot points, and character analysis
โœ”๏ธ A discussion of important quotes, themes, and literary elements
โœ”๏ธ A fun, interactive Blooket game based on the assigned chapters!

๐Ÿ“– By the end of this course, students will have developed deeper reading comprehension, critical thinking skills, and a love for literature.

Learning Goals

Students will gain knowledge of new vocabulary words by defining unknown words and participating in discussions.

Learning Needs
Reading comprehension questions and vocabulary keys are provided after each class. Pre-reading videos are available for each reading assignment. Message instructor for specialized accommodations :)

Drums, Girls and Dangerous Pie features a little boy with cancer. Walk Two Moons includes the death of a mother and a stillborn baby The Outsiders includes violence (fighting) and a character kills someone The Giver mentions Stirrings (when characters have mature thoughts about the opposite sex) A Wrinkle in Time discusses other planets and life on those planets Blooket does not require an account to access.
Supply List
Students should have a copy of the book with them at home. These books can be found at the local library and online.
