Class Experience
Social Studies - Melissa Quijano has a Master's of Adolescent Social Studies Education and has been teaching for over 5 years. She is extremely passionate about the social sciences and strives to make history relatable to students. She is constantly looking to expand her perspective on historical topics by going to museums all over the world. Melissa frequently teaches about imperialism and colonization and works hard to ensure multiple viewpoints are shared and that the voices of those affected are not silenced. She has studied colonization in Africa and Latin America at the graduate level. Science - Lora Danley has been teaching since her undergraduate years at MIT and has amassed over 20 years of teaching experience since then. She has taught learners of all ages from 5-65 both in person and online. Lora is extremely passionate about science and former students report that she makes the subject fun and interesting for them.
Science: After the first class, students will receive packets for each class that include the in-class worksheets as well as the optional homework problems, materials to have on hand to do the in class activities (if they wish) and instructions for the optional at-home projects. Students will also receive the e-textbook as a file after the first class. For the first class students will need pen and paper and a paper clip or a safety pin. Social Studies: Notebook, pen; digital is fine
2 hours per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
The Social Studies aspect of this class will discuss imperialism. The Opium Wars were fought over the right of the British to distribute drugs to the Chinese people. Social Darwinism and eugenics were popular modes of thinking that influenced British actions during this period as well.
