Outschool Pods: English Club: Dystopian and Greek Mythology (Summer Camp)

In this English Club, students will read and discuss a different dystopian short story each Wednesday, looking for the themes and connections to modern life. They will also learn about Greek Mythology every Friday. This summer camp pod is divided into 2 sections for ease of payment - taking both sections will result in a complete semester's course.

Class Experience

Learners will better understand elements of literature through reading and discussion
I have a BA in English and a MA in Humanities/Theater Arts, and a lifetime teaching certificate.

I have 40 years of experience teaching English Language Arts to adolescents-- and I am still smiling! What can I teach? If it deals with language, I can do it: grammar, literature, essay writing, creative writing, poetry, and word study to name a few. I have also directed plays for over 35 years for kids ranging from 3 to 18, and for adults in community theatre, so I can teach all aspects of Theater Arts. Because I am also an actress, I am energetic, enthusiastic, and animated.
All materials and supplies will be provided to students by the teacher. Materials will be posted to the classroom.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Students will be informally assessed during class. Homework can be assigned upon request.
1 hour 50 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.
Much dystopian literature is disturbing because it often depicts the worse impulses and acts of humans. Many dystopian stories act as a warning of what could happen IF we don't act in some way to stop it. I have taught dystopian literature to classes for about 15 years, and believe I can handle sensitive issues without becoming overtly political.
