55 mins in-class hoursClass Experience
Students will learn the essential steps in how to safely build a fire in the woods under almost any circumstances using only natural materials and a firesteel. Through informal discussion, the class will first share their level of experience and confidence in the forest. Then, with the use of images as well as examples of natural materials, Sean will explain step-by-step each stage necessary for preparing, building, and maintaining a fire. The first 10 minutes will be devoted to discussion of our experience in nature, the next 30 minutes will be devoted to an explanation of the natural elements required, as well as a focus on safety and proper respect for nature and environmental stewardship in the wild. During the final 25 minutes of the class, Sean will demonstrate the techniques taught and show a fire being built properly with the class.
Learning Goals
Students will know what kinds of natural materials to collect and how to build a fire safely in the forest.
Other Details
Parental Guidance
To ensure safety with a class like this, the teacher will be the only person in the class allowed to handle the firesteel for making sparks and the only one to demonstrate building a fire safely. After the class, students may want to try some of the techniques learned and they will need adult supervision to do this. This safety requirement as well as other safety precautions will be focused on and highlighted throughout the class.
Supply List
All the natural materials will be collected by the teacher. Students might want to invest in an inexpensive firesteel in order to try out some of these techniques in the future, but it will not be necessary for them in the class.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.

Camping and bushcraft has been a passion of mine since childhood. I believe that true respect for the planet and its environment comes from spending time in nature, understanding its wonder, and feeling confident and safe in the woods.
