Description
Class Experience
In this interactive and fun one-time class, students will learn the eight planets in our Solar System and some interesting facts about each. Since singing and music help us remember, we'll learn two lively songs: the first to help us learn the order and composition of the planets: The 4 terrestrial (rocky) planets (Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars) and the 4 Jovian (gas giant) planets (Jupiter, Saturn, Neptune and Uranus). We'll then learn how planets rotate on an axis and orbit around the sun...
By the end of class students should understand the difference between the planetary movements of rotating and orbiting and will be able to give some facts about each of the eight planets in our Solar System.
Students should bring a small globe if they have one or any type of ball which can be used to simulate a planet in our music and movement portions of the class. They will be moving the ball through the air so it should be small enough to comfortably handle in class.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Informal assessment will be given at the end of class in the form of a discussion/wrap up. I will ask students to show me (using their ball prop) a planet rotating and orbiting, as well as ask them how long it takes to do each (one rotation takes one day; one orbit takes one year).
40 minutes per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
