Class Experience

In this one-time class, learners will enjoy listening to the Scholastic story: Peppa’s Easter Egg Hunt and completing a craft alongside their classmates.
Pre-K, Kindergarten and Grade 1 students will develop their listening and practical skills in this fun and low key class. The students will be given a 2 page printout with step-by-step instructions. The teacher will start by introducing the activity and asking students to start coloring each side of their Easter basket printout. As they color, we will read the selected story. The teacher will show the story using an overhead camera, so it feels like we are actually in an in-person story-time together! The teacher will ask some basic comprehension questions every few pages to deepen the students understanding. After the reading, we will complete the rest of the craft activity which will consist of more coloring, cutting, glueing and imagination play.

Students will need:
- crayons or markers 🖍
- glue sticks or white glue
- scissors ✂️
- the 2 page printout 📄 provided in the classroom: Easter basket paper craft and Easter eggs sheet. (Please note that a full color version and a coloring sheet version will be available in the classroom. Parents may choose which they would like to use based on their printer ink and/or their learners stamina for coloring). The Easter Basket portion of the lesson will be the main activity. Students may need extra time at home to complete the cutting out and possible coloring of the eggs. It will not be necessary to completely finish this step during class.

Students do not need any particular knowledge to join this class. However, basic cutting and gluing skills are necessary. If they still need assistance, it is ok to have a grown up assist off screen or to cut out the pieces for them before class.

If there is extra time at the end of class, students will be encouraged to share their ideas about the story, Easter egg hunts or Peppa Pig. As this is a secular platform, no religious ideas will be discussed here. Students are strongly encouraged to share their completed work in the classroom!

Teacher expertise and credentials
I teach classes related to ESL and to Japanese Language and Culture. Creativity is my biggest strength, so I’m constantly coming up with new courses for you!
I have a BA in Pacific and Asian Studies and I minored in Linguistics, so I am especially interested in Japan/China and in fact, all of Asia. I lived/taught in Japan for 10 years and have been teaching online for the past 5 years. While I was in Japan, I created multiple textbooks/workbooks for learning English, which got me started with curriculum creation. I studied Japanese formally in both Canadian and Japanese Universities and in practice in my life in Chiba/Tokyo. I have an N2 level Japanese Language Proficiency Test Certification (2008,2014). I consider myself to be conversationally fluent and have a deep understanding of grammar and culture from the perspective of a “foreigner”. Here in Canada, I am teaching skills sharp with my 7 and 2 year olds.
The best compliment I ever received as a professional was from a Japanese coworker in Tokyo. She said, “You have a special, mysterious power. The children are drawn to you and can’t help but want to speak to you”. As an educator, I take the privilege of the children’s attention seriously and I use my *powers* to boost their confidence through patient and friendly guided practice! Whether we are studying English or Japanese, I pride myself on adjusting my approach for each student/group so we can all have fun as we learn!
I am a little quirky, I gotta say. I’m not afraid to make silly faces, use crazy examples or to bust out in song in class (or…anywhere really)! I’m into hiking, sewing, making art, singing and having all kinds of local/international adventures with my family.
