Learn about Otzi, otherwise known as the Iceman, who was discovered in 1991 by two German hikers in the Tisenjoch Pass of the Similaun glacier in the Tyrolean Alps. Initially thought to be a a modern corpse, it was quickly discovered that Otzi was several thousand years old. Scientists immediately went to work trying to figure out the questions that were associated with the Iceman, all of which we'll discuss in the class together! Who was Otzi? What was he doing there? When and where did Otzi live? How did Otzi die? What interesting items did Otzi have on him when he died? Scientists have gathered a tremendous amount of information from this incredible archeological find. Otzi's body was largely intact and very well preserved. I was inspired to list this class after a visit to the South Tyrol Museum of Archaeology in Bolzano, the capital of South Tyrol in Northeastern Italy. I knew after my visit there would be many interested learners who might want to learn about this fascinating scientific discovery!

Otzi the Iceman is a fascinating subject. It goes without saying that we are discussing the life of a 5,000 year old mummy by examining his remains. I have largely left out graphic pictures of Otzi's body that are rife on the internet, and have replaced them with reproductions of what he may have looked like in life. Having said that, we are discussing history and science by studying a unique mummy. If you feel like this might upset your learner in any way, please consider this before signing up. Many thanks.

Much of the information that I use in this lesson was personally gathered by me from the Museum of Archeology in the South Tyrol this past summer. However, I did use a variety of websites for pictures of Otzi's clothing and equipment.

Hello, my name is Michael DiMinno and I have been teaching for over 20 years. I hold a Master's degree in Elementary Education and spent most of my tenure as a classroom teacher. Over the past 3 years I have shifted to remote small group instruction and tutoring. At this point, I have taught well over 1,000 students on Outschool and have attained the level of Star Teacher. While I enjoyed being a classroom teacher and tackling multiple subjects, my real passion is teaching history. I believe that being a teacher is the greatest vocation in the world and in order to reach young people effectively, you have to work to make connections with the students and make the material engaging and accessible. I use humor, as well as my vast collection of military uniforms and artifacts, to bring history to life for my students. Outschool learners from all over the world have enjoyed seeing these period uniforms while learning about topics surrounding WWII, WWI, the Civil War, and the American Revolution. I don't handle any firearms, and there are no inappropriate uniforms or symbols.
