1 live meeting
55 mins in-class hoursClass Experience
Dive into the Kelp Forests with me and learn about all the sea creatures living there!! Otters, urchins, sea lions and so much more! We will focus on the Kelp Forest ecosystem and discuss the kinds of animals and plants that live there, what they need to survive and threats they are facing. We will discuss specific species that live within Kelp Forests, focusing on the keystone species that are critical for keeping the ecosystem in balance. We will also brainstorm strategies that we all can incorporate into our daily routines to help preserve our oceans. The session will be a mix of slides and videos with interactive discussion questions mixed in. Students will be encouraged to share what they already know about the ocean, marine animals and kelp forests and we will use those understandings to build upon newly presented information. There will be an open discussion forum prior to each class where students can submit questions or topics of interested related to the ecosystem we will discuss before each meeting. The session will conclude with some quiz questions to test the students' understanding of the topic. After the session, resources will be provided for additional activities they can do on their own at home relating to Kelp Forests. Hope to see you all there!

Teacher expertise and credentials
I am a STEAM educator and marine science researcher studying coral reef and seafloor ecosystems. I've been teaching a variety of STEAM topics to students K-8 at the Challenger Learning Center. Additionally, I have ongoing research projects that require me to spend a good deal of time underwater observing the animals that live there, and I would love to share the wonders of our oceans with you all!
