45 mins in-class hoursClass Experience
In this one time class, I will be sharing skills developed over the past 25 years in the recording industry, while we will discuss the expectations of music production in a recording environment. This class is open to learners of all experience levels. You do not need to be a musician to pursue a career in music production. You simply need to have the drive and willingness to learn how to understand music enough to communicate with artists you will be working with. We will discuss the differences between being an audio engineer and being a music producer and how both of these roles are important but not mutually exclusive when making a great sounding recording. We will cover the importance of critical listening and what a future music producer should be listening for i.e. song structure, timing, tempo, pitch and performance energy, just to name a few. I will provide a lexicon of terminology that will help a future music producer be able to speak the same language as the recording artist they will be working with. Not all people interested in music production are performers themselves, these terms will help them develop the vocabulary they will need to utilize in the future. Egos can be very fragile while in the stressful environment of the recording studio. I will give tips on how to keep recording sessions positive, fun and productive. This class will be an open discussion and I will be fielding any questions the students might have about music production.
Learning Goals
Students will gain a new understanding of what really happens in a recording session. They will learn to listen intently to the details in the music they will be working on. The students will leave with a larger lexicon of musical terms to use in their future musical endevours.

Teacher expertise and credentials
I am teaching classes on music production, music appreciation, and songwriting.
I have been a performing and recording musician since 1990. My bands have shared the stage and been on recordings with some artists that have become household names: (Blink 182, Less Than Jake, Goldfinger and Jimmy Eat World) just to name a few.
I have been a professional music producer and audio engineer since 2005. I have had the privilege to work with artists of various genres including; (Rock, Punk, Metal, Pop, R&B, Country, Hip Hop, Jazz, Classical and Experimental). I have recorded an audio book with Pulitzer Prize Award winning author David Maraniss, did drum production on a Grammy nominated record for Country artist Jessi Lynn, produced audio for the Emmy nominated series Lego Star Wars and produced audio for Jon Stewart's "The Daily Show" finale.
As a teacher I emphasize that students do not need to be a virtuoso to be great music producers. My goal is to build the confidence in students they will need to talk to artists to help them reach their full potential.
