Welcome to our spelling class. Orton-Gillingham method! Orton–Gillingham is a structured literacy approach. It introduced the idea of breaking reading and spelling down into smaller skills involving letters and sounds, and then building on these skills over time. The teaching of new concepts incorporates visual, auditory, and kinesthetic pathways. With this approach, students learn language by ear (listening), mouth (speaking), eyes (seeing), and hand (writing). Orton-Gillingham takes the overall reading, writing and spelling concepts and breaks them down into smaller segments through use of repeated practice, sequencing and systematic approach that allows children to better master phonic skills associated with simple letters/letter sounds into more complex phonic skills. In this class learners will interact with both teacher and students. This class is taught by a professionally trained Orton-Gillingham teacher. Each lesson will include sounds cards, phonemic awareness activities, word lists, visual memory exercises, sight word exercises, decodable stories, and extra phonics activities.
