Description
Class Experience
Students will be able to identify the beginning sounds, middle sounds, and a specific target sound. Students will practice segmenting and blending the sounds. They will learn how to apply the sound to writing. By the end of the 4 weeks, students will use all these skills with various reading concepts such as: medial vowels, digraphs, blends, r-controlled vowels, vowel teams, "rule-breaker" words, etc. My goal is for students to leave every class with practical knowledge that they can apply immediately.
I am a Certified Reading Specialist Pre-K - 12th grade. I have taught many grades and ages over 11 years total (Reading Intervention for 5 years in 6th, 7th, and 8th grades, Preschool for 4 years, and I am currently teaching Reading Intervention in multiple grades at a public elementary school). In addition, I have been trained using the Orton-Gillingham approach. Most importantly, I am a mom of 3 children, and that has been so rewarding and insightful. I'm committed to growing and learning every day. It is incredibly rewarding to see a child's confidence in reading soar. This takes time, effort, practice, and repetition - but is well worth it. Thank you for letting me be a part of your child's reading journey!
I like to call this "home fun." Students can apply some of their skills with every day objects around the house.
Dry erase board and marker or paper and pencil
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
In the 1st week, I will do a quick reading assessment to know where to target my teaching. At the end of class, I will also do another informal reading assessment to see growth.
30 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.
