Week 1Lesson 1Introduction to AffixesLearners will be introduced to the components of words (morphemes, graphemes, etc), and begin to recognize the familiar morphemes (-ed, -ing, and -s/es)Lesson 2Introduction to Affixes (continued)Learners will continue to explore suffixes -ed, -ing, and -s/es. Learners will explore the various sounds of the suffix -ed and be exposed to "Double, Drop, Change" rules for adding vowel suffixesLesson 3Grammar and Writing: Nouns and Ending PunctuationLearners will discuss nouns and ending punctuation, using an exercise called "Blah, Blah, Blah" to practice creating meaning when reading.Week 2Lesson 4Suffix -able, -ibleLearners will be introduced to the suffix -able (alternative spelling -ible)Lesson 5Context cluesLearners will be introduced to context clues: words or phrases that give readers clues or ideas to the meaning of words. They will use a 4-part method for deducing the meaning of words using context clues.Lesson 6Grammar and Writing: Capitalizing NounsThis lesson includes a discussion of capitalization of proper nouns.Week 3Lesson 7Suffix -ful, -lessLearners will begin to dive into the 3-part drill: a tool used to practice previously-learned morphemes. Learners will understand how spelling changes differ with consonant suffixes.Lesson 8Context Clues, ContinuedLeaners will explore various types of context clues: definition, appositives, synonyms, antonyms, and examplesLesson 9Grammar and Writing: Pronouns and CommasLearners will understand the use of pronouns in English as a replacement for nouns and practice the use of commas.Week 4Lesson 10Prefixes un-, in-, dis-Learners will be introduced to three common prefixes (un, in, dis) and explore the idea of an assimilated (chameleon) prefix. Learners will continue to practice the 3-part drill.Lesson 11Emphasizing Words, Shades of MeaningLearners will discuss how emphasizing words in a sentence can change the meaning of the words, and also explore how words can be thought of on a spectrum to add interest to writing.Lesson 12Grammar and Writing: Adjectives and Commas in ListsLearners will use a brain map of the five sentences to explore adjectives and explore the use of commas in lists.Week 5Lesson 13Introduction to Latin: Bases "rupt" and "form"Learners will begin to explore about the influence of the Latin language into English. Learners will explore the bases "rupt" and "form."Lesson 14Vocabulary: Using MorphemesLearners will explore how morphemes can help us understand unfamiliar vocabulary words--and how sometimes this may lead us astray.Lesson 15Grammar and Writing: Verbs and ApostrophesLearners will explore three types of verbs: action, linking, and helping. Students will improve their understanding of the English language, its history and structure, its grammar and usage rules, and spelling and writing conventions.
I am a certified elementary teacher with years of experience in preschool and second grade. I have also taught ESL for 3 years on-line, and hold an MA in Teaching from Dominican University. I am trained in the Orton-Gillingham approach through IMSE (30-hour morphology plus course).
Homework Offered
Occasional homework will be assigned. This might include completion of a worksheet, practice with a game, or review of affix/root flash cards (made by students during class). **PLEASE NOTE: Younger learners may need help with the organization of our interactive notebook. Please contact me at any time for instructions to make the notebook something that can be useful for learners during and after our course.***0 - 1 hours per week outside of class
Assessments Offered
Progress reports are available upon request. Learners are informally assessed each day 1 and 2 on their knowledge of and ability to spell previously-learned morphemes.Grades Offered
All learners should use a 1-inch 3-ring binder with dividers (5 or more is fine). Print-outs will be provided each week and these should be added to the notebook for student reference (having a 3-hole punch can be very helpful). All learners should bring a whiteboard and marker, as well as a pencil, to each class. In addition, learners should have a set of notecards that are 4x6 inches and come in 5 colors: yellow, blue, lavender, pink, and green. Powerpoint presentations and games played on wordwall.net will be displayed via screenshare. Students may review or practice through Kahoot--no account required, I will send a code for you to use. A second device is preferable on days with Kahoot practice (I will send clear information/instructions if/when we use Kahoot).
