In this weekly ongoing, interactive mutli-sensory class, Let's Fill In the Missing Blanks class, will use the Orton-Gillingham method of Reading, Spelling and Writing to teach or remediate reading, spelling and writing. This interactive weekly class will enable students to decode (read) and encode (spell) using spelling rules. Students will use multi-sensory ( see, hear, and touch) methods to learn and most importantly "remember" the sounds and when each is used. Flash cards will be used daily. The students will then be given a list of words to read with the sound. This may be done using choral method or one at a time. Next the students will write a sentence with words that have the new sound in it. Then a new sound will be introduced. This is a structured class with the same format used daily. Students need to know the sounds of all consonants. The topics to be taught will be short vowels, magic e which will make the vowels long, cvc words, blends, ways to spell long vowels, r controlled vowels, syllables, prefixes, suffixes and common sight words. This class is good for remediation as well as any child who is ready to learn to read. Students will have chances to interact with the teacher and other students as they learn the sounds and how and when to use them in words. As they practice spelling the words, the method uses positive modeling to correct mistakes- no x's on incorrect words. This builds confidence and reinforces the correct spelling. These spelling rules will enable your child to spell decodable words from the sound not from memorization. How is this class structured? The class is structured with the teacher introducing the letters and sounds and when to use them. The student writes the letters and says the sounds. Words will be dictated with the sound for the day. The student will write the words. The teacher will monitor and correct any misspellings by having students draw a line through any word that is not spelled correctly and all students write the word correctly two more times. No student is called out for missing the word.
Learning Goals
Students will learn letter and sound combinations using the Orton Gillingham Method. This will improve the ability to analyize ( read) words as well as improve fluency. Students will also learn to spell and write sentences.
