In this ongoing course we will practice recognizing, reading and spelling words with various patterns. We will also continually review and practice important spelling rules. We will learn prefixes, suffixes and root words. Each class will run in the exact same format as to instill confidence and security in the children. I will follow a lesson plan that includes a visual drill, blending drill, and auditory drill. Students will have a student response sheet (SRS) in which they will record their responses for the auditory drill and the remaining parts of the lesson. In each class I will introduce a new skill. Students will read phonetically fair text and fluency strategies will be employed. Near the end of each lesson I will teach the students a new memory word (not phonetically fair, must be learned and memorized). We will practice our new memory word and review our previous red words. We will use movement methods such as table writing, arm tapping and sky writing to improve chances of the information going into long-term memory. Our final task will be dictation. I will dictate one to three phrases or sentences for the children to write. Students will practice self-editing strategies. If there is time at the end we will play a game or I will tell a joke or give the children a riddle. Schedule: Week of October 4th: Review of Long E Spelled ey, Syllable Patterns, Long U Vowel Teams: ue, ew Week of October 11th: Practice with Tricky Vowel Teams oi/oy, au/aw, ou/ow Week of October 18th: Important Spelling Rules: Doubling Rule, E Drop, Change Y Rule Week of October 25th: Syllable Division, Accented Syllables, Schwa Week of November 1st: Making Words Plural: Adding -s, -es, changing f or fe to v before adding -es. Intro to Prefixes and Suffixes. -ing Week of November 8th: Suffixes -ed, -er Week of November 15th: Suffix -est, Prefixes re- and un- Week of November 22: No classes due to Thanksgiving Week of November 29: Suffixes -ful, -y, -ly Week of December 6: Suffixes -less, -tion, -sion December 13-January 9th : No classes Note: Class is changing from three days per week to two days per week. Indiana Teaching Certificate in Social Studies/History
I am a licensed teacher in the State of Indiana with over 25 years experience teaching, tutoring and coaching. I have been trained in the Orton-Gillingham method by The Dyslexia Institute of Indiana and in Kindergarten OG by the M.A. Rooney Foundation. I have completed Advanced Orton-Gillingham Training and Written Expression Training through the Dyslexia Institute of Indiana. I have completed courses on dyslexia and structured literacy through the Montessori Foundation. I have also taken a Conscious Discipline training. I am a professional member of the International Dyslexia Association. I am currently working on LETRS training through Voyager Sopris Learning and have completed Units 1-7 with Certificates of Mastery. In 2018-2020 I worked in a private Montessori school serving students who have Individual Service Plans.
