Class Experience

Beginner Level
Content will be taught using the Orton Gillingham approach. Orton-Gillingham is a highly structured approach that breaks reading and spelling down into smaller skills involving letters and sounds and then builds on these skills over time.

The sequence of instruction will be as follows:

Week 1 –short vowels (a and i) consonants – (b, p, t, m,n,f,h,d )
a. welded an & am (when appropriate)

Week 2 –short vowels (o, u and e) consonants – (js,z,l,hard c,k,hard g, w, v,r,x,qu,y)

Week 3 Initial c/k Spelling Generalization

Week 4 Digraphs – sh, ch, wh, th (voiced and voiceless)

Week 5 Consonant Blends – start with beginning blends, then end blends, then beginning and end blends in same word, and last complex blends (3 letter blends and consonant digraph blends)

Week 6 ck & k/ck spelling generalization

Week 7 Concept of a syllable & Closed syllables

Week 8 Z FLoSS Spelling Generalization

Week 9 vce syllables (a-e, i-e, o-e, u-e, e-e)

Week 10 Long vowel monosyllable words ending with a, e, i, o, u

Week 11 Review Games

Week 12 Passage Read and Fluency

My teaching style is to build on student strengths. Students will be able to interact and work together collaboratively during class. The first weekly class will be focused on reading using the weekly concept and the second weekly class will focus on spelling using the new concept. Class will consist of concept discovery, notes, student work, and a short fun video to end class.
