Class Experience

US Grade 7 - 10
This class features a live, interactive, weekly webinar, and additional virtual classroom activities and readings. It is perfect for homeschooled students or those looking for enrichment.

We will be using advanced tools of the Orton Gillingham approach, to break down meaning of more advanced vocabulary, focusing on roots and affixes, especially those that come to us from Latin, Greek, and Anglo Saxon. This is an important next step in becoming a proficient reader, for all those who have mastered basic decoding skills, because vocabulary development is crucial to becoming a good reader and writer. In fact, it is one of the 'magic ingredients' for reading success. Yet, many students really struggle with this issue. Direct instruction of vocabulary can have tremendous impact on students. It will help them with reading comprehension, increase their content knowledge, and is an excellent form of test prep for numerous standardized tests.

This class will approach Latin and Greek roots, prefixes and suffixes by organizing them according to meaning, together with methods fundamental to Orton Gillingham. It is appropriate for upper elementary/ primary and middle school students.

Students will be assigned homework, which will include a weekly list of spelling/ vocabulary words, making their own flash cards, writing short compositions that include the vocabulary under consideration, as well as using curated, related materials. These will include resources such as vocabulary.com and Quizlet, Kahoot, articles, history videos, as well as other resources.

Students should come to class with notebooks/ paper, writing tools, highlighters, and any flashcards we have made. They should be prepared to take notes during class, as well as make use of the various external resources that I share. Vocabulary needs to be practiced several times per week. Students should also be willing to participate in the discussion.
Learning Goals
Students will learn to identify prefixes, roots, and suffixes. They will also learn how to dissect words to unlock meaning.
