Origami is the Japanese art of paper folding! It is a great way for young learners to practice following directions, develop fine motor skills, and grow in their confidence and creativity. In this ongoing weekly class, learners will learn step-by-step how to make a variety of origami animals, such as a dog, cat, lion, penguin, etc. The end goal is for students to have enough animals to have their own little “origami zoo”! Below is an example of the weekly themes that may come up: Week 1: Secret Life of Pets Week 2: Big Cats Attack Week 3: Birds of a Feather Week 4: Under the Sea Week 5: Mythical Creatures Class Format: Since this class is geared towards younger learners, I will provide a lot of modeling and individual support. We will start by introducing ourselves to each other and then I will present the “Animal of the Day”. We will also learn some fun facts about each of the animals! I will guide learners through the folds step-by-step using a second camera set up so that they can see both my hands and my face. The small class size allows me to personalize my instruction and give learners individual support if needed. At the end of class, learners are encouraged to decorate and color their creations, and share them with the rest of the class if they wish!
Learning Goals
Students will learn how to fold a variety of origami animals.
Other Details
Supply List
Please set learners up with... - solid colored origami paper - pencil, eraser - coloring tools (ex. markers, colored pencils) - gluestick or tape NOTE: Origami paper can be purchased at most craft stores or online at Amazon. I suggest getting a bulk pack of double-sided 6x6 in. colored origami paper so learners can use colors that best match the crafts we make. White origami paper is also great, as learners can always add color after folding! If you do not have origami paper, white printer paper cut into a square will work as well. However, construction paper or other paper that is thicker/denser will NOT work.
Language of Instruction
English
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
