Class Experience

During this course, students will be guided step-by-step to create their own Origami animals. Students will use their hands to follow a specific set of steps both verbal, visual and textual prompts in a sequence (procedural text) to develop cognitive development and fine motor skills. Origami fosters a positive growth mindset. Children set a goal and work hard to achieve a visible result.
Children are transforming a 2-dimensional square piece of paper into a 3-dimensional object while developing spatial awareness. Project will begin at the basic level of the four primary folding techniques, moving to creating a (cat, dog, or rabbit face) then advance to a medium level difficulty project (such as, whale, crane, bat or jumping frog.) Students will need scissors, ruler, markers or colored pencils, square colored, or plain paper (approximately 6in x 6in or 8.5 by 8.5). Paper can be cut from standard 8.5 x 11 paper or Origami paper can be purchased at a local craft store or on Amazon (Amazon Basics Origami Paper, Assorted Colors, 200 Sheets for about $7.00). If possible, please pre-cut or purchase at least six, 6in x 6in or 8.5in x8.5in squares to be used during class. Size doesn't matter but the paper must be a square. A parent may need to be available to assist younger students, students who struggle with following directions, or frustrate easily. Origami can be challenging.

My teaching philosophy is to do whatever it takes to help your child learn. I like to build on your child’s background knowledge and interests to get them excited about topics. When children are excited about a topic, they learn without even realizing it! Engaging learners make the process fun and exciting and create a foundation for a love of learning.

I look forward to meeting you in one of my courses. See you soon!

Happy Learning,
Dr. Amy R.
