Optical illusions are images that are created to challenge visual perception, a topic studied by cognitive psychologists. In this class, students will be shown a variety of optical illusions and encouraged to discuss what they see. Rather than telling students what to look for, I will pose questions and try to get as much student participation as possible. Students will also be introduced to age-appropriate psychology terms related to the visual perception. No prior knowledge is required for this class. I hope students have fun and are able to see images in new ways! Depending on the number of learners enrolled, and the interest in certain things being discussed, the outline may be adjusted slightly to allow for more depth and/or student led research. Students are encouraged to ask questions, if needed. A positive class culture is a must, so I prefer learners to take turns when participating and to treat each other respectfully.
Learning Goals
-Students will explore and discuss several optical illusions.
-Students will gain an understanding of how optical illusions challenge visual perception.
