Students will learn by interacting with each other and the teacher to create examples; practicing skills orally before committing them to paper; and writing regularly. Students will learn to organize and develop single paragraphs. This includes an introduction to paragraph format, the structure of paragraphs, adding details to make paragraphs more interesting, and integrating sources into paragraphs. A session on evaluating of sources for reliability is also included in this class. Grammar help will be given to students as needed. Every class session will include individual or group writing tasks. Homework will include research, sentence-level writing, paragraph-level writing, and integration of quotes into a paragraph. It can be sent to me as an Outschool mail message or presented at the beginning of class, depending on the learner’s preference.

Teacher expertise and credentials
As a student of Philosophy, I was frequently asked to understand and evaluate texts. As a teacher, I have found that students are sometimes unprepared for this kind of evaluation. Either they are hesitant to express a point of view or they do so in ways that make their views easy to dismiss. Opinion writing is an important skill in many areas of life, and particularly vital to college-readiness.
