Open Circle promotes constructive, supportive conversations among teens. Learners can drop in and out at their convenience; when they are present, young people will engage in civil discussions about the issues that matter most to them. At the beginning of each class, we will review the basic rules of keeping conversations respectful and constructive (including topics not appropriate for the space, rules for interacting, and protecting anonymity of others). From there, those learners who have joined us will share the topics they wish to discuss and choose what will be covered that day. The instructor will guide and shepherd the conversation to keep speaking time fair and ensure the safety of the space. Our goal is that each week, learners will take away at least one important thought from the conversation. This is an ongoing course, so learners are not required to join every week; instead, learners are encouraged to use the space as a Friday afternoon social space with constructive, worthwhile takeaways. Even if they arrive late or need to check-out early, youth are encouraged to join the conversation at their convenience. First and foremost, learners will gain better listening skills. We will discuss the mindset that allows for active listening and the appropriate body language that shows speakers they are heard. Conversations will be both subjective and objective; knowing the difference between these thought processes can help learners with presentations and essays. Team problem-solving and friendly debate are also encouraged--both are integral in modern education. Learners who see themselves as more introverted or shy around their peers are encouraged to join! They will never be forced into any conversation or debate; rather, they can grow as observers until they are ready to chime in. The class itself will hold a laid-back, warm atmosphere for collaboration and brainstorming. Learners are encouraged to share their opinions and thoughts on everything from the current mental health pandemic among teens to travel, TV, and sports. Within each conversation, we will work as a team to apply what we've learned to a larger context. For example, we may begin by talking about YouTube influencers which can transform into deeper thoughts on celebrity culture or Internet fame. The learners will bring their ideas, which will be enhanced and fleshed out via natural, guided conversation among young people. To repeat, learners don't need to show up every week or stay for the entire class time. Think of this class as a lounge for sharing young ideas. NOTE: Learners are welcome to bring conversations around politics and religion to meetings, but only from an objective point-of-view and not to promote any group.

Other Details
Parental Guidance
It is always possible that topics around violence and sexuality will come to the forefront. In this case, learners will not be allowed to discuss specific incidents or stories from their own experiences. Instead, the conversations will stay broad and safe. If your learner is uncomfortable with these or other issues, please let me know and I will be happy to accommodate.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Teacher expertise and credentials
I developed Open Circle while teaching at-risk youth, many of whom lived in poverty. By giving them the space to open up emotionally in a safe space, learners built connections with one another, grew their social safety webs, and participated in education-based activities more willingly. My goal is to move the difficult conversations that are now being had on social media or through texting into more direct human connection. The results will previous youth have been powerful: they enjoyed having a safe, guided community to discuss the issues that are weighing on their minds--often those that they can't discuss with adults.
