ONLY Penguins! Meet Adelie, Gentoo, and Emperor Penguins in Antarctica, 8-10

US Grade 3 - 4
Is your child enthusiastic about penguins? In this One-Time class, learners will join me on a virtual trip the southernmost continent, see LIVE* pictures or video of penguins in Antarctica, and learn about the natural habitat and behavior of Adelie, Gentoo, and Emperor penguins. I have lived and worked at a science research station in Antarctica for two summer seasons, and I love sharing first-hand knowledge with learners on Outschool. Scientific information shared in this class is based on research currently being conduced in Antarctica (how "cool" is that!). Photos and videos are either from my personal collection or from scientist's work in Antarctica. Students will receive a penguin coloring sheet and a set of animal trading cards with facts and information about these three penguin species, plus other Antarctic Animals (bonus!). Learners who enjoy this one-time class may also enjoy my ongoing class Antarctic Animals where we learn about several animal species in the Antarctic ecosystem. To keep these classes unique and different, the pictures I share from my personal collection are different in all my classes. Live video is from the same source, but of course changes daily because it's in real time. We will finish with a game using the penguin trading cards (provided) and have some fun with their knowledge of Adelie, Gentoo, and Emperor penguins. *LIVE video feed: This is a very special experience, yet is highly dependent upon internet connectivity, weather, and time of year. While I make my best effort to give students this opportunity, the first rule of Antarctic Exploration applies - sometimes (often!) things don’t go to plan. When live video is not available, I will show previously recorded video from the same locations. Please note: I also offer a similar course for learners aged 11-13. Photos, videos, and scientific information presented is similar, however teaching style and learner activities are differentiated to accommodate for educational levels at both age groups.

I’ve lived and worked in Antarctica for two summer seasons at a science research station. I’m passionate about the Icy Continent, and am happy to share my first-hand knowledge and experience with learners in my courses and answer as many questions as I can. In addition to sharing my personal experiences, several of my courses draw on expert knowledge in Antarctic science, history, and logistics from people I met while working there. This extensive set of educational resources developed by science researchers and Antarctic logistics specialists gives learners a first-hand look at real scientific research being conducted in one of the most remote environments on the planet, along with the logistics that help support scientific discovery. I look forward to sharing Antarctica with your learner.
Prior to working in Antarctica, I taught World Geography in Alaska for 10 years. Antarctica was always my favorite unit to teach! My courses also draw on materials I’ve used in the classroom to teach about the Icy Continent.
