In this 8 week interactive course, learners will learn about geography, diverse world cultures, and traveling as they explore the world without leaving their computer! Worldschoolers learn through engaging with and exploring the world as they travel, gaining new experiences and memories that make lessons memorable and meaningful. While not everyone has the time and ability to travel the globe for months at a time, we can recreate the very best parts of worldschooling in an immersive online...
In this course, the learning goals are to build our understanding of and respect for countries and cultures around the world. We'll be building map skills, cultural awareness, and geography skills. The weekly mosaic tiles and travel brochure design will also build creative and artistic expression skills. This holistic approach will likely build even more skills as the course progresses.
I have a Ph.D. in cultural anthropology, and have a lot of experience teaching students about new and different cultures. I have also traveled extensively and understand the value of exploring new places in the world (either in real-time or virtually).
Before each class, students will be asked to do some research on the country we will be visiting and to create either a travel poster or travel brochure to present to the class. Brochures and posters can be drawn and colored by hand, or can be made using the computer. Additionally, if students don't finish their tile mosaics during class, they are welcome to work on them after class. The art portion is completely self-paced and optional, but it adds a lot to the hands-on experience of the course.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
45 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.
